Bacteriological Studies on Otitis Media in Children


Abstract
Most of the bacteriological studies of otorrhea from otitis media done in the past have been. conducted gn the adult cases, and there have been few studies on childhood cases, however, the result of these report varies particularly iii their bacteriological distribution.
This study is done on 98 strains, which are considered to be pathognomic organism for otitis media, from the total of 92 cases seen at ENT dept. of Kyungpook National University Hospital during the period between Jan. through jun. of 1974.
Some significant findings are as follows;
1. Male cases outnumbered by 55 to 37, approximately half of the cases are lesser than one year, and also more than half of total cases have made a clinic visit no later than three days after. Fever, restlessness, rhinorraea and cough were common preceding symptoms.
2. Bacteriological distribution shows roughly two third of total cases are identified as staphylococcus in 60 strains, and more than ten different species are also seen including pneumococcus.
3. Sensitivity test to various therapeutic agents show as follows;
a) Pathognomic organism in general; Those who are susceptible to gentamicin comprises 100¡Æ%0, 95.9% to carbenicillin, 88.8% to streptomycin, 88.8% to kanamycin, 8? 7% to ampicillin, 81.6% to lincomycin, 79.6% to penicillin, those who resist to colimycin comprises 64.3% and 64.3% to terramycin.
b) Pathognomic organism in particular;
1) Staphylococcus: susceptible to penicillin in 96.7%, streptomycin in 93.3:x, kanamycin in 93.3%, cloxacillin in 81.7% gentamicin in 100%, lincomycin in 100%, ampicillin in 100%, carbenicillin in 100%, and resist to colimycin, terramycin, vibramycin and tetracycline.
2) Pneumococcus: susceptible to most of agents, except terramycin, vibramycin and tetracycline.
3) Alkaligenes fecalis: susceptible to gentamicine and carbenicillin but resist to most of agents.
4) E. coli: susceptible to kanamycin and gentamicin,
5) Proteus: susceptible to streptomycin, gentamicin and carbenicillin.
